Planning Department

The Planning Department controls the growth and development of land and the City in general through the use of design and implementation of zoning ordinances and building codes. The Planning Department monitors the growth of the city through housing construction, business developments and land use patterns.

Community Development Department

The Community Development Department is funded through annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds awarded to the City by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Through the use of these funds, and additional grants received at the State level, the department is able to maintain administrative staff, provide housing rehabilitation programs to low and moderate income homeowners and renters, and assist in making homeownership a reality for many residents.

CDBG funds have also been utilized to reconstruct streets in low income neighborhoods, install curb cuts and sidewalk ramps for accessibility in the downtown area, construct a new fire station in the south end, assist a local shelter for the homeless and create new housing opportunities.
