FIRE FIGHTER

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  To perform a variety of tasks when engaged in the combating, extinguishing and prevention of fires; answer medical calls, extricate and rescue individuals from fires and entrapment, respond to hazardous materials calls, and the operation and maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus and quarters; and to perform related work as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Work is performed under the supervision of a superior officer.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:  An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following:  (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

 

Ø  Respond to fire alarms with fire company, connect and control hose lines and nozzles, erect ladders, turn water on or off and use extinguishers, axes, hooks and lifelines.

Ø  Operate fire fighting apparatus, pumps and other auxiliary fire equipment.

Ø  Respond to emergency calls removing persons from danger and/or applying emergency medical techniques for life-threatening injuries.

Ø  Respond to rescue calls, operate auxiliary power equipment and/or deploy rescue boat and other gear during search and rescue work.

Ø  Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of a fire station, clean and wash walls, care for grounds and make minor repairs.

Ø  Wash, hang and dry hose.

Ø  Wash, clean and polish fire apparatus.

Ø  Prepare meals.

Ø  Participate in fire prevention inspections.

Ø  Make periodic inspections, flow tests and maintenance of fire hydrants.

Ø  Post to daily station log, prepare accident and fire reports and other records.

Ø  Participate in overhaul and salvage operations.

Ø  Participate in drills and other departmental training functions.

Ø  Perform related work as required.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

 

Ø  Knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations in the city.

Ø  Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.

Ø  Mechanical aptitude and mental alertness.

Ø  Physically sound and active and must meet height, weight and physical requirements as established by policy.

Ø  Willingness to perform any assigned task.

Ø  Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees.

 

An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training and experience:

 

Ø  Graduation from an accredited high school, plus some responsible work experience.

Ø  Must have Fire Fighter Phase I and II training as required by the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council (Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs).

Ø  Must possess a valid Michigan Basic EMT certification or higher.

Ø  Must have Hazardous Materials Operation Level.

Ø  Must have and required to maintain a valid State of Michigan driver=s license

POLICE OFFICER

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  To perform responsible law enforcement which includes but not limited to the enforcement of laws and ordinances, prevention, detection and investigations of crime and delinquency.  The apprehension of violators, the recovery of property, preservation of order and related police functions.

Ø  Conduct searches of buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve walking and/or standing for long periods of time.

Ø  Enter and exit vehicles quickly to perform rescue operations, pursue a suspect or answer an emergency call.

Ø  Operate an emergency vehicle; during the day and night; in emergency and pursuit situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, while exercising due care and caution; and, in congested traffic, unsafe road conditions, and environmental conditions such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.

Ø  Load, aim, and fire handguns, shotguns, and other agency-specific firearms from a variety of body positions in situations that justify the use of deadly force while maintaining emotional control under extreme stress.

Ø  Identify wanted persons and vehicles; and, locate stolen property and identify potential evidence, which requires the ability to distinguish color and perceive shapes.

Ø  Perform law enforcement patrol functions while working rotating shifts and unanticipated overtime.

Ø  Perform tasks which require lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects while performing arrest, rescue, or general patrol functions.

Ø  Perform searches of persons which involve touching and feeling to detect potential weapons and contraband.

Ø  Pursue fleeing suspects on foot both day and night in unfamiliar terrain.

Ø  Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures and the law for purposes of ensuring appropriate officer behavior/response and performing enforcement activities involving the public.

Ø  Subdue resisting subjects using hands and feet while employing defensive tactics maneuvers or approved non-lethal weapons.

Ø  Use body force to gain entrance through barriers to search, seize, investigate and/or rescue.

Ø  Conduct initial and follow-up investigations on complaints and crimes.

Ø  Performance of general or specialized patrol duties.

Ø  Responsible for criminal and non-criminal calls for service.

Ø  Perform traffic enforcement duties.

Ø  Provide protection for private and public property.

Ø  Take charge of emergency situations in the absence of a superior officer.

Ø  Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informants.

Ø  Ability to accurately and completely prepare written reports and forms.

Ø  Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations.

Ø  Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and high speed vehicle operations.

Ø  Communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and by giving information, directions, and commands.

Ø  Perform other essential tasks as identified by the employing agency and/or the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards= job-task analysis.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

 

Ø  Some knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, codes and ordinances.

Ø  Basic knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, principles and techniques.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Ø  High school graduation or GED equivalent and an Associate=s Degree is preferred.

Ø  Completion of state accredited or in-house training academy or pre-service employment qualification from M.C.O.L.E.S. is required.

Ø  Considerable training in self-defense, crowd control, radar usage, precision driving, legal updates, first aid and other law enforcement training is preferred.

·        Ensure that all riders fill out the appropriate waiver.

·        Gather and store away inner tubes in an organized fashion at the end of each shift.
