Traffic

The Traffic Section (TS) is responsible for maintaining pavement line markings, signage and 22 traffic signals. This section consists of a Master Electrician and another employee. Both maintain certifications in Traffic Control Device Installation and Maintenance.

The TS also has the responsibility of operating two bascule draw bridges over the Black River. They are the 10th Street, and 7th Street bridges. A third draw bridge (Military Street Bridge) is owned and operated by the State of Michigan.


The bridge opening schedule is as follows:

Military Street Bridge:
From May 1 through October 31:

From 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven days a week, the bridge need only open on the hour and half-hour for recreational vessels, or at any time that there are more than five vessels waiting for an opening.

From 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., seven days a week, the bridge shall open on signal. 

From November 1 through April 30:

The bridge shall open if at least 12-hours notice is given.

Seventh Street Bridge:

From May 1 through October 31:
From 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven days a week, the bridge need only open on the quarter-hour and three-quarter-hour for recreational vessels, or at any time that there are more than five vessels waiting for an opening.

From 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., seven days a week, the bridge shall open on signal. 

From November 1 through April 30:
The bridge shall open if at least 12-hours notice is given.

Tenth Street Bridge:

From May 1 through October 31:
From 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven days a week, the bridge need only open on the hour and half-hour for recreational vessels, or at any time that there are more than five vessels waiting for an opening.

From 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., seven days a week, the bridge shall open with at least one-hours advance notice. 

From November 1 through April 30:
The bridge shall open if at least 12-hours notice is given.
